Facts about Carefree, Arizona
Located in Maricopa County, Carefree is a town that’s home to just under 3,700 residents. Considered an upscale area, the platting and design for the town was developed in the 1950s. K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington are credited with coming up with the community’s design and overseeing the construction that began in 1958.
Carefree remained an unincorporated community until 1984. The impetus for incorporation came due to concerns that nearby Scottsdale would attempt to annex the community.
Television and motion picture production came to the town in 1968. With the establishment of Southwestern Studios, the company offered employment opportunities for those seeking short and long-term work. During the time that the studio was in operation, several television series were produced there, including the New Dick Van Dyke Show of the early 1970s. Productions starring such luminaries as Bob Hope, Susan Strasberg, Eva Marie Saint, and Forrest Tucker were shot there.
One of the distinguishing features of Carefree is the large sundial erected at the Sundial Circle Plaza in 1959. Still in place today, it’s said to be the third largest sundial in the Western Hemisphere.
