Facts about Cave Creek, Arizona
Found in Maricopa County, Cave Creek has a population of just under 4,900 people. The community was first settled by solders who traveled from Fort McDowell to the area. Gold was found in and near the town in 1873, leading to a surge in growth. The town itself is named for a cave that’s found next to the creek bordering the town limits.
Preservation is important to people living in the area. One example is the Maricopa State Park. In 2000, a joint project involving the town of Cave Creek, the state, and the county led to the purchase of the Spur Cross Ranch. The property was organized as a park, making it possible to preserve the various types of cacti found in the area. The Park also contains stone formations and other artifacts that are said to date back to the days of the Hohokam tribe.
Other examples of historical preservation are found in Cave Creek. A number of structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They include the Tubercular Cabin that’s found on the property of the Cave Creek Museum, the Golden Reef Stamp Mill, and the First Church of Cave Creek. Frontier Town is a site that contains some of Cave Creek’s original structures.
