Facts about Peoria, Arizona
With portions found in both Maricopa and Yavapai counties, Peoria is a city that is considered to be a suburb of Phoenix. Currently, it’s home to just under 176,000 residents. Named after the city in Illinois, the city’s name is a rough translation of a Miami-Illinois word that means prairie fire.
Located in the Salt River Valley, Peoria owes its existence to the efforts of William John Murphy. As is true for several other cities and towns in Arizona, Murphy was instrumental in securing land, platting cities, and recruiting settlers to come to the state. In the case of Peoria, he successfully recruited citizens of Peoria, Illinois to resettle in the new city during the latter part of the 19th century.
One of Peoria’s claims to fame is as a training camp site for professional sports teams. Currently, the city is the training home for the San Diego Padres. The Seattle Mariners also do their training at the Peoria Sports Complex.
