Facts about Scottsdale, Arizona
Located in the eastern section of Maricopa County, Scottsdale is home to more than 258,000 residents. For years, the city has used the slogan of “The West’s Most Western Town” as part of its tourism campaigns. During the past several decades, the city has experienced consistent growth, making it among the fastest growing cities in the nation.
The beginnings of what would become Scottsdale can be traced to visits by U.S. Army Chaplain Winfield Scott in the middle of the 1880s. Impressed by the potential he saw, Scott returned with his family in 1888 and established a permanent home. As part of the development, Scott and his brother planted a number of orange groves. That led to the early name for the community: Orangedale.
A public school system was established in the following decade. The early 20th century brought more agrarian operations into the area, along with some manufacturing. The city was also known to be welcoming to those involved with the arts. The construction of the Granite Reef and Roosevelt dams triggered a population boom that lasted into the early years of the Great Depression.
Today, Scottsdale is still known as a haven for all sorts of artists. Since the official incorporation in 1951, the city has also attracted attention from a number of corporations that either established headquarters or major distribution centers there. The city maintains a balance between historical preservation, offering high-end shopping options, and offering some of the most desirable neighborhoods to be found in the area.
